Many nonprofits struggle to find participants in their programs, suffering from a “build-it-and-they-will-come” philosophy. Instead nonprofits should work on embracing a sales-driven approach. The Stanford Social Innovation Review has written in detail an article, How Some Nonprofits Build Sales Teams on a Budget. The article offers valuable advice and examples for developing a budget minded sales strategy while reaching more of the nonprofits target audience.

Personally, I see how adopting this approach would bring value-add to any service and program driven nonprofit environment. You can’t help nor connect with your audience if they don’t know you exist and if you don’t cultivate a trusting relationship. Nonprofit legal aid organizations, community services and education can all benefit.

The passing of Tony, the Truck Stop Tiger

I learned about Tony through the Animal Legal Defence Funds (ALDF) Summer School Series earlier this year. Where the ALDF successfully obtained a judgment in 2012 prohibiting the state of Louisiana from issuing any future permits for Tony’s captivity.

That judgment should have required the State of Louisiana to move Tony to a reputable animal sanctuary. Instead, the Louisiana legislature passed a law exempting the Tiger Truck Stop (and just him) from the Louisiana Big Cat Ban.

Tony passed away in October while still in captivity at the Tiger Truck Stop parking lot in Grosse Tete, Louisiana.

“Tony’s tragic death demonstrates how our legal system leaves wildlife, including members of endangered species like Tony, extremely vulnerable to exploitation by incompetent or uncaring individuals,” says Animal Legal Defense Fund Executive Director Stephen Wells.

Barbell for Boobs 2017

This year my wife and I participated in the 2017 Barbells for Boobs fundraiser at Crossfit Versatile in Greensboro, NC. Our goal was to raise $50 and honor a friend who is currently battling breast cancer.

Did you know…

  • 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
  • 7% of those women will be under the age of 40.

We were happy with our performance due to my wife having to compete while injured. However, we were thrilled to have met our goal, as we raised $51 for the cause.
